Most apples packed in the United States are coated with a vegetable wax that makes them shiny and attractive to the consumer. If you wash them under HOT water you will cause the wax to discolor, get cloudy. If the apple was 'not good' before the washing then after the washing and when you tried to eat it, you found out just how 'bad' it really was. My advice to you is always wash your apples but with cool water and dry, then cut into them to be sure they are the texture, etc that you want. If you find that you are disappointed in the apple, return it to the grocery for a refund or replacement, keep your receipt. My advice is to buy fresh apples that are in season, like now we are picking Fuji, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Granny Smith, they should at their peak! Enjoy!!

it turned white because it has wax on it to make it look pretty. maybe it was bad before you washed it?
Reply:All commercial apples are covered with a dyed protective wax substance to preserve it for weeks on end. When you shine an apple it's the wax your buffing. My guess is the apple was old and the hot water melted this wax.
