my sister just called me and told me that her fingertips around the nail that she bit off is swollen, red and she has some pus! this has happened to me before because i am a nail bitter too but it cleared up all by itself. I was just wondering how can she treat this at home? i was thinking by washing her hands with antibacterial soap and applying something like alcohol or what should she do?
How to treat Infection of the skin around or under the nails?
Apply a cream like Neosporin to the red areas to prevent further infection. And if it does not clear up in a few days, see a doctor before it gets really bad.

go to a nail salon they sell treatments for anything wrong with your nails or hands!
Reply:Bacitracin and band.aids, and stop biting your nails to the quick
Reply:try tea tree oil
Reply:She could soak her finger in a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide. That'll seep under her nail and clean the wound out.
Reply:soak in apple cider vinegar
Reply:antibacterial and alcohol will burn if she has open sores. I would recommend getting TEA TREE OIL. You can find it at any health food store, maybe even wal-mart. It's a natural disinfectant and sterilizer and will help it clear up faster than anything. I use it on my toenails, fingernails, burns, cuts.
Reply:Peroxide and then some antibiotic.
Reply:If you apply alcohol it would dry up the skin. She could probalby clean it with alcohol and then apply neosporin + pain relief (if she's in a little pain). She could just buy the plain neosporin, and apply a clean bandage to it. I would probably change it twice a day.
Reply:Well. Alcohol would dry out the skin which I don't think would be good for it. But overall, I think that what you said is a go. Use peroxide maybe.
Reply:SOAK YOUR FINGER IN VERY WARM WATER FOR ABOUT 15 MIN. THREE TIMES A DAY.
AS A PERSON WHO WORKED IN THE MED. FIELD,THE WASHING OF HANDS CONSTANTLY WOULD DRY OUT MY NAIL CUTICLES, CAUSING INFECTIONS UNDER THE EDGE OF MY NAILS.
Reply:Lamisil and I know you have seen the commercial but since it did not pertain to you then you were not listening.
Reply:it is infected alright.do wash it with clean water and soap and keep it dry after washing. Bacteria thrive in damp places...so keeping the infected area clean and dry will help in it's healing process.
